Spring Nature Photography Workshop @ Okefenokee National Wildlife
Mar 10 @ 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Folkston, GA – Local award winning and widely published nature photographer, John Reed, will conducta Spring Nature Photography Workshop at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, March 10 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m (registration begins at 7:30 a.m.). “March is a wonderful time to photograph at Okefenokee. Winter is on the wane and spring is just around the corner. Cool days with warm sun, and the biting insects aren’t yet out looking for their lunch” says Reed. “The iconic alligators are there up close, plus all manner of birds, flowers, beautiful landscapes, and perhaps even a bobcat, raccoon, fox squirrel, bear or more! You never know what you’ll see”.

Go back in time to the Chesser Island Homestead for a taste of what early life on the swamp was like. Even if you’ve been here before, every visit is different. Photography here is a blast with this sort of variety.

Spend the day with us enjoying this magical place; learning fundamentals to take memories home though photos you create. The workshop includes both classroom instruction and roaming the refuge to apply your new photography skills to capture, save, and share your day.

Cost for the workshop is $60 in advance. Walk-ins will be welcome as space permits for an additional $5 fee. The workshop is sponsored by the Okefenokee Wildlife League, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and John Reed Photography. For registration and information, call the Richard S.
Bolt Visitor Center at 912-496-7836 between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The $5 entrance fee to the refuge is not included in the workshop cost.

Pioneer Day @ Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
Nov 17 all-day

Pioneer Day is Quickly Approaching!
November 17 – Mark Your Calendars

Folkston, GA…..The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is busily preparing for the Pioneer Day Festival, hosted at the Chesser Island Homestead along the refuge’s Swamp Island Drive. Join us on Saturday November 17, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for a fun-filled day of crafts, demonstrations, and bluegrass music.

Thanks to dedicated and hard-working volunteers, the Chesser Island Homestead has a newly-installed sugar cane grinder to demonstrate the process of grinding the sugar cane to extract juice for cane syrup. Come see the grinder and syrup shed in action, and purchase a jar of cane syrup to share with family and friends.

Children’s games and crafts, pioneer demonstrations, live animals, and educational displays will be available throughout the Chesser Island Homestead during the event. Visitors will also be able to tour the inside of the house and see the kitchen with authentic wood-burning stove in use. Activities and demonstrations will be going on throughout the day.

While on the refuge for Pioneer Day, be sure to stop by the Richard S. Bolt Visitor Center to learn more about the Okefenokee habitats and wildlife and to watch the award-winning film. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the picnic area, then walk some of the refuge’s hiking trails. Plan to spend the day enjoying this beautiful season in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
